When using TotalCommander
 
what / where do you type what in to access registry?

With XP is there a similar Start>Run> regedit?

I don't know how to do it in total commander, however, PHM Regedit is my favorite registry editor.

Open up total commander, you'll see this:
http://imgboot.com/images/codybear/screenshot1_1.png

Click on plugins, you'll see this:
http://imgboot.com/images/codybear/screenshot2.png

then click on registry, you'll see this:
http://imgboot.com/images/codybear/screenshot3.png

Then you should be able to figure out where to go from there depending on what registry locations you're going to edit.
