Battery life with varying coverage

My Sprint 6800 can eat its entire battery in under three hours if I am driving through an intensive coverage / no coverage / roaming area. This is very frustrating. If I simply forget my phone is on, I can find my battery is dead in a very short period of time. It's very shocking when you expect to be able to make calls, but find your battery is dead, just from you walking or driving for a few hours in the wrong place!

Are there any ways to combat this? Reduce the search rate? I feel like I have to babysit this phone as it stands.

By comparison, my GSM Palm Treo could take a solid 24 hours of constantly gaining and losing coverage before losing battery. I guess I was spoiled...

how long have you had your phone? these batteries are supposed to get better after a little while and mine has recently started lasting alot longer.

also can you try and set your phone to 'sprint only' and see if the battery lasts while u travel through this area?

I recently drove through coverage no coverage area (3 hours each trip)and my battery life was actually better than with my usual spot with 0-2 bars. I have to charge my phone every day but when I came back after 15 hours out of town my battery was 50%. I guess the battery life is very unpredictable.

It's interesting... it seems that the more I use the batteries, the longer they last. So this phone is pretty new, and I'm seeing better and better battery life, as I cycle the power regularly.

I would say the battery life is fairly flaky, however, probably due to CDMA? And no matter what I do, the battery life when gaining / losing coverage regularly is still not very satisfactory.

Any ideas on adjusting the search rate?
