Unlocked?
 

I'd like to confirm something.

Just received my Alltel 6800 in mail.

I've been querying about unlocking, but when I powered on the device, one of the items in the list on the desktop page says, Device Unlocked and has a little picture of a padlock with the shackle open.

Does this mean that I DO NOT have to go through the unlocking process?

And now, it was suggested that I upgrade my ROM.

I've read through a few of the threads and would like to received just a little more guidance. Could someone please suggest a good ROM for basic browsing, GPS, calls and WiFi? and point me to the best tutorial so that I can upgrade the ROM? and radio?

Current radio version is 1.40.00
ROM 2.14.671.3

I'd like only to do this once, and get it right the first time, then I will call Alltel to transfer my number to this new phone.

You need to look at your bootloader version. Hit camera, power, and reset at same time. Also you rom is way old. Either flash up to date 6.1 or go custom. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=33857

What am I going to see when I do that? and how will I know if it is unlocked?

I dont think it is unlocked. If so it is unlocked for nongps roms. Use either 2.4 or 2.47 for unlocking for gps roms. I like2.47

Hang in there with me, I'm new to all of this...

1. Okay, I will attempt to unlock using instructions in the GAMedic tutorial.

2. How do I upgrade the radio (how do I install a .rar file)

3. Where is the link for WM 6.1 and how to go about flashing up to that one.

Read the instructions for radio flashing more carefully. Everything is there. I don't know who your provider is but sprint 6.1 rom is on htc site.

A rar file is just another file compression system like .zip files. You will need to find a rar reader program that can un-rar them into a folder on your desktop. Winrar has a trial version http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm <- there and you can also use the rar reader for ppc's "pocket rar" attached to this post. To use Pocket Rar you will have to install it on your 6800 and then save the rom and radio that you find in rar format to a card and un-rar them into a folder on the card and transfer them to your PC via card reader. It's much easier to just use Win Rar. Dont forget to hit the thanks button for all the people helping you today! Good Luck.

I'm slowly getting there.

I have the Olipro 2.4 loaded.

Now in the process of upgrading radio.

Then I will move onto the WM 6.1. Where is that flash / download link?
