GPS stays on after going into standby

This would be really useful if it works, especially for those people who can't get aGPS so they don't have to lock after backlight goes out.

Could someone test and see if these settings actually work? I am going to be busy tomorrow and won't have any time, but would love to see if it actually works.

If you don't know what you are doing please be careful, at least back up your registry keys before deleting them.

In the registry I found these settings for power management.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Power\Interfaces]
"{EB91C7C9-8BF6-4a2d-9AB8-69724EED97D1}"="Power-manageable display"
"{98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006}"="Power-manageable NDIS miniports"
"{8DD679CE-8AB4-43c8-A14A-EA4963FAA715}"="Power-manageable block devices"
"{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}"="Generic power-manageable devices"

Each one of the {} strings are an IClass for other device including the GPS. The one found in the GPS was this "{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}. When I deleted the IClass string out of the following keys, you are now able to put your phone to standby and the GPS will keep running.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\GPSID]
"IClass"="{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\SerialGPS]
"IClass"="{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}"

Original instrux taken from here.

Re: GPS stays on after going into standby

Hmm... I would like to see if this works, but I am a little confused about this post. Not quite sure which keys to edit and where.

Has anyone tried this yet?

Re: GPS stays on after going into standby

as a workaround, not as good though, couldn't you set the backlight level to minimum which basically turns it off and disable having the backlight turn off? seems like it would minimize current draw while still running the gps.

If you have a gps app using the gps then it is still going to stop when the phone goes into standeby so having the gps running will not be useful. If you want to use the gps in the phone as an external device to something else like a pc, I'm not sure the connectivity functions while the phone is in standby. For example, it seems unlikely the usb data will not pass when the phone is in standby as it seems the phone would shut this service off.

You delete the two IClass keys from below (don't just delete the values from the entry boxes), and it seems to work well!

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\GPSID]
"IClass"="{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\SerialGPS]
"IClass"="{A32942B7-920C-486b-B0E6-92A702A99B35}"
