loosing evdo during tethering...

All too often I loose evdo while tethering, say once an hour. Sometimes it comes back up after a few minutes, but more frequently it gets stuck in 1xrtt mode and needs a reset to get back (phone on/off does not help). Is there a way to force the phone back into evdo mode without reset? Or to make it happen less often?
Any ideas?

I'm running latest stock rom with 3.42.02 radio and 60613 prl.
