has anyone figured out a way to prevent this from happening? Or does it look like we are just going to have to open and close the soft keyboard untill the next ROM update?

Since this has become the Threaded message problem thread, I'll post my problem here.
With previous ROM's I used to get a notification that the message was sent. With the latest stock ROM, I no longer get that notification. I looked in "sounds and notifications" and there is not even a setting for it, nor is there one in the menu option in messaging.
Any ideas?

That is because with the newest ROM they removed the "Message Sent" notification.

It was really annoying, most of us disabled it anyway.
