Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Hi all - bit of a quirk here. I've been trying to get my work computer (XP) through Remote Desktop. Got Remote Desktop working today through no-ip.com, and it brings me to the Windows 2000 server log-in screen, where I put in my login info. I am then taken to a Win2000 desktop, but am able to access my private work network. Basically, the screen looks pretty much like it does if I log in from another computer at work, but through Windows 2000.

So - is there any way for me to actually see MY computer desktop with all my stuff on it, or is that not possible?

Thanks,

Gerry

"Windows 2000 server" ??

Sounds like you're logging into a different computer...

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Yeah, you're absolutely right - it's logging into the server under my login, thus the private network folder. Any advice on how to direct it to my specific desktop?

Thanks - sure appreciate the help.

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Hmm...under the "Remote" tab of System on my PC, I see that it has a place to select remote users - must I allow my PPC access from here somehow?

Also, I tried taking what I had been using as the Computer and putting that under Domain, then using what's listed as "computer name" in the control panel of my PPC - no dice. Please help!

Thanks,

Gerry

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Your work network may have a setup with a shared IP address, and each desktop assigned a port address. If you are just getting to the network server that is probably the case. So the address to put into the remote desktop app needs to be "xx.xx.xxx.xx:yyyy" where the x's are the IP address you tried, and yyyy is the specific port address for your desktop. Get the info from whoever set up your network.

BTW, earlier versions of remote desktop for WM did not allow the "yyyy" string to be input, so you are lucky that you can now do that.

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

My guess is you dont have public IP on your work pc. The address you are using to connect to your work pc is being redirected to a terminal server (guessing).

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Go To Logmein.com create an account and add you computer which you want to access remotely. A small application will be running in your desktop and you can loginto logmein.com from your Mogul and access your work computer. I am extesively using this option and works great for me. Hope it solves your problem.

Re: Remote desktop takes me to generic work PC

Ok Ill try to explain this as best I can.

Your company has one Ip address that faces the internet, and you have a router/firewall/NAT device that shares this one IP connection with all the machines on the local network.

Right now you router is configured to forward all requests on your.ip.com:3389 to the windows 2000 computer in question. (3389 is the default port for Remote Desktop Connections).

You need to talk to whoever administers your firewall/router and ask them to either change the destination for 3389, OR have them forward a different port to your workstation.

then you can access your workstation at your.ip.com:PORT#
