Re: Waas/egnos?
running stand alone has nothing to do with WAAS or EGNOS. Waas and egnos are for better accuracy. The are an addon to regular gps originally intended to help planes land with more precision.
My mogul get's a warm start in only 15 or so seconds with garmin software. less then a min from a cold start with garmin, but's that's probably because it's also using it in Agps mode as well. I have no idea if it's waas enabled or not, but do you really need that kind of accuracy within ~5 feet. Typical gps is within about ~15 feet, which is fine for driving or hiking. |

Re: Waas/egnos?
WAAS uses satellites and terrestrial stations to improve accuracy. Because the Mogul can use agps to achieve something similar, I highly doubt it is WAAS enabled. EGNOS is a European initiative, and again, I doubt it.

Re: Waas/egnos?
I know what WAAS/EGNOS are that is not my question, I'm asking if the qualcomm chip is capable of it.
So is there a confirmed yes? I'm asking because I am running ArcPAD 7.1 and precision and accuracy mean everthing. |

Re: Waas/egnos?
if you are doing that kind of work, you might want a bluetooth gps receiver anyways. When the mogul screen goes off, the gps goes off as well. Some software programs can't recover from it, some can. But i find sometimes i have to reboot to start my gps up again. So keeping your gps running and your screen on the whole time will kill your battery life on your phone rapidly. It drains quickly.
Bottomline, unless you have a power supply right where you're at in the field, bluetooth gps is better. The external one i use is this one. http://www.buygpsnow.com/Product/Glo...unt)__925.aspx It has a 20 hour battery life and is waas enabled. From all the datasheets and stuff about the mogul's chipset, nowhere does it mention Waas or Egnos, safe to say it doesn't utilize them. If it did have it, then their marketing people would suck for not putting that out there. |

Re: Waas/egnos?
I could not find anything on the qualcomm chip either, I've got a IOgear BT receiver that gets 25hrs but does not have WAAS. I should be really looking at a Trimble, but to purchase one for "school" purposes does not make any sense. Your receiver suggestion is definitely useful though. I noticed the battery drain using iGo which forces my screen to stay backlit.
Back to the BT for now...or at least software correction...blah, I hated that puck and line of sight bs... Thanks for the info... |

Re: Waas/egnos?
the tilt has the same chipset (GPSone) and according to the discussion here it does in fact not have WAAS

Re: Waas/egnos?
Thanks for the info guys...
I've gone back to my Magellan, battery drain was killing me, and my BT receiver is horrible in hilly forests Last edited by mecreyes; 04-14-2008 at 12:25 AM. |
