How do I backup VZW ROM?

Newbie alert. I am fairly new to the whole PPC scene. I re-flashed my previous Razr phone from VZW to ALLTEL to get around some of the stupid VZW limitations, so I'm not new to mucking around with my phone. This time, I want to jump in and try some of the custom VZW ROMs out there, but I'd like a tried-and-true way to backup my ROM and be able to restore it. How do I backup my existing ROM for testing? I've seen the stock VZW RUU file out there, but I'd like to know how to create my own - just to be safe. Thanks!

Is there a README or documentation on that utility? After searching, it seems that people are always getting help offline/chat to use it...

There's no need to back up your personal "stock" rom when there is a stock one out there. They will be identical. The ROM image even when downloaded from your device will not include any of your current data like contacts or programs. Check the version numbers if you want to be more confident in that.

Part of the reason i've been helping people personally is because there is some command line and hex involved that changes each iteration so it's easier to walk through it by hand most of the time. Also, the rebuilding of the downloaded image into a flashable file takes some more hex etc. I then test the rom on my own device before sharing it for safety as its quite easy to make a non-booting flash from a backup. And for cases like this i know that the rom is already available and can help to save some time.

The IRC chat is a valuable resource!
