To enter bootloader mode, turn your phone off. While pressing and holding the "volume down" button, power the device on. Release the volume key when the bootloader mode starts.

If you do a hard reset dose it earse all your contacts as well

yes. everything is set back to factory.

there are a many options you can use to back up contacts though.
my current favorite is google sync but you can also use microsoft myphone or pim backup.

My preferred method is with phone off press and hold vol down and red end key at the same time. A multi colored screen comes up indicating bootloader. Release keys.

Then make sure you press vol down first(a split sec) ahead of the red end key.
