I've got a SIM from Mobal Communications that I've used when travelling and their rates are pretty good, especially for calling back to the States and for making local calls w/in Europe. The SIM I got from them has a UK phone number tied to it.
thanks.. ill give it a shot!

Just got off the phone with them myself. My only warning is that they will try to sell you on a plan, but don't push it very hard. To ensure I would be able to have a functional phone in Germany Thursday, all I ended up needing to do was give them the SIM card number and update the roaming data with the *229 (or whatever it is). No plans, no monthly fees, if I need it, it will work and I will pay through the nose for it. All good for what I needed, at best it has to make ONE call.

BTW, I was impressed at how often they stressed how much data would cost without a plan (like $21/MB) and even made sure (over and over again) that I knew how to disable the Data Connection so I wouldn't accidentally incur rediculous charges. I thought that was a nice touch myself, even if it was redundant and annoying to me. Just glad to see that they either care enough to go through it, or don't want to have disputed charges from unknowing travelers. Either way, they're not trying to gouge you on global data, and it was appreciated.

Re: Traveling Abroad

Hey, I am contractor working in Iraq and travel through Europe quite a bit. Mostly through England and Germany on my way through to the Middle East. Call Verizon and have them switch you to Global, get the unlock code for your phone/sim card and then when you get to Europe go to a cell phone shop (you won't have any trouble finding one) and get a local SIM that is prepaid. If you buy one on the internet they are going to RAPE you. Much cheaper just to get a prepaid while you are in that country. Then, when you are done with it just swap out your SIM with the original one while you're in the states. If you plan on going back then hang on to it. If not, sell it. You can get more than you paid for it if you sell it back here. Good luck and don't forget to update your roaming when you get off the plane. Also, Verizon has an OUTSTANDING 24/7 Global Customer Support phone number that you can call from any country you are in while you're there. Verizon is great overseas...
