upgrade "build" vs. 2.1 OS?

Forgive but I'm new to all this. I've been reading posts about the 2.1 upgrade to the operating system which recently came out - not sure if I want to do that just now.

But then I stumbled across a "Rom Update" on the HTC site which came out last fall. it's 2.73.405.5

My "build number" is "1.56.651.2 CL85027 release-keys"

So what's the difference between this Rom upgrade and the 2.1 OS everyone is talking about. I bought my Hero 30 days ago so it seems strange that I don't have that newer "build" whatever it is.

Should I upgrade to this new ROM?

Advise please?

Jack

Re: upgrade "build" vs. 2.1 OS?

it's just a minor official update that they did back then. nothing useful.
just update to the new 2.1 OS.
better yet, root it and use Fresh's 2.1 ROM. you can customize it so much more then just the official 2.1.

thanks! still ambivalent about 2.1 given all of the issues/problems I see posted on the various forums. My Hero is running fine right now and I've made that upgrade mistake before on my computers - but I also have "upgrade-itis", meaning it's hard to sleep knowing my device is not running the latest and greatest!

your thoughts on going for 2.1 now?

I'm on Fresh 2.1. Is it better to stick with this, or is their a positive side of going with the official 2.1 release?
