Numeric Texting during phone call?????

when im on a call and try to text and the same time, all the text letters i type are numberic as if i got the dot pressed down for the numbers.. why is it doing this

i have the att 8525 wm 6.1 pro

I have noticed the same problem. When this happens I just use the on screen keyboard.
