Free wifi hotspot without root?

In the LG Optimus S section is a thread saying if you add the wifi hotspot widget to one of the screens, and use that, you can get free hotspot because going this route it bypasses the network authentication from the native app.

Is this true? Has anyone tried this on the EVO? Would be very beneficial to know for those of us who are not rooted.

It works to link your EVO to your PC, but there is no connection between the EVO and the Sprint network.

Use z4root and you can use wireless tether without rooting. Select the temporary option and install wireless tether and run it. Works until you reboot then you have to run z4root again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953

I have stock EVO,
I tried as above,
SuperUser granted access to WirelessTether,
but WirelessTether says 'Unable to start tethering. Please try again!',
Any additional ideas?
UPDATE,
Got it to work,
softbooted a couple times and had to edit some of the 'settings' in Wireless Tether,

What version of tether are you trying to use? Try this. Check it out from your Android phone:

I use the one built in Azreal's rom and it works great.

Try a different version of wifi tether. It took me 2 different versions to get one that worked. I understand trying to tether without rooting but it is just so easy to use unrevoked that it makes more sense to just root.
