i didn't want to install a third party text app, but i caved in a few days ago and i'm glad i did... handcent = win.

Just downloaded Handcent, wasn't impressed really.
Okay, it's customizable.
Coming from someone who mods everything he has, I actually don't care about that when it comes to texting; which is weird. The only thing I liked was the fact that I could see strings of messages clearly. Like if I received two or three texts in a row from the same person. But other than changing the font and colors Handcent didn't blow my socks off or anything.

Is there some hidden gem that I'm missing here?

I like for all the customizations , yea most of it is just cosmetics, but everything is at your controls. Plus I like the pop up box that pops up with each new text, very convenient.Text to speech its a nice feature also while driving. You can add pictures to your background to add more flavor to your text messaging setup up. Hell you can even change your vibration pattern for incoming and sent texts.Stock is boring and lackluster.

to each his own.... i think once you realize the potential that handcent has over the stock app then you will really appreciate it..

Okay I just tried Handcent again, since selling my Droid (4mths ago) and I must say the improvements are nice. I particularly like the "Handcent Greeting" feature. That's what put this app over Chompsms for me. I am deleting chomp from my list of apps and making Handcent my sms of choice. (I believe handcent is smaller in size)
