Riptide9's Glass Icons Exstentions

2 Attachment(s)
For those of you wearing Riptide9's Glass Icons from over at XDA I received the psd the other night to design icons for other apps not included in his original Icon Pack. Because his icons were included in his theme thread I wanted to create a thread solely for the purpose of creating these unique Icons here at PPCGeeks. I will take request for apps not included in the Original Glas Icon Pack and the Exstentions I create here. Mods if this is the wrong thread, my apologies as I am sure it will be moved to the appropriate place. More coming soon and enjoy! You can get Riptide's original Glass Icon Pack and check out his Themes here over at XDA.

Update 2/13/11 - How to Install Glass Icons Tutorial has now been added. Scroll down for Tutorial.

Edit: Updated 2/5/11 - Scroll down for Tutorial on how to make the Glass Icons.

Update: 1/25/11 - It has come to my attention that many may not know how to install Riptide's and Slayer's icons. You can read the how to install tutorial here over at XDA. You will need the free App Folder Organizer. Hope this helps!

Tutorial For Making Glass Icons

Prerequisites:

Gimp Software (
Free)
Your Artwork
Start_Icon File (attached below)

1. Create a folder on your Desktop or where ever you prefer, name it Glass Icons or what ever, and make sure all of your art is in this folder (makes it easier to navigate).
2. Download the Start_Icon File and place it in the Folder where you put all of your Artwork (Note: All artwork including the finished Icon that you create must be in .png file format. For those who don't know what that means, it means the board in Gimp where you are doing your work must have the checkered background (transparent). You can use a .jpg image, but you have to make sure the background has a transparent background before adding it to the Gimp Client. To make this really simple just use all .png files (makes life so much easier).
3. Open your Installed Gimp Software. Once the application launches you will see 3 tabs. ( Main Tab, Tool Box Tab, and Layer Tab). Move the Layer Tab and Tool Box Tab to the left or right of the screen which ever is comfortable for you.
4. In the Main Tab click on File, select Open, and Navigate to the Folder containing your Artwork and select the Start_Icon_128.psd File which you added to the Artwork Folder from below. See images below. Once Start_Icon_128.psd is selected, simply click Open.

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5151/tut1q.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1696/tut2d.jpg

5. You should now have a Clear Glass Icon with a Checkered Background on the Stage of your Main Tab as shown below.

http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/6785/tut3w.jpg

6. Open your Artwork Folder ontop of the Gimp Main Tab (for drag and drop purposes) and Drag the image you want inside the Clear Glass Icon, drop it onto the Stage on top of the Clear Glass Icon. (Remember all files must be .png format) It doesn't matter if the Artwork is too big and overlaps the Glass Icon because we are going to Scale it to a size that fits inside the Glass Icon. (we'll get to that later) See Image below...

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7523/exe3p.png

7. Make sure the Artwork is the top layer. Sometimes if the artwork is to big it is hard to tell if it's on the top. To make sure it's on the top, use your cursor to move the top Layer. In the Tool Box Tab select the move Tool. See below images. Notice how the Second image has the Glass Icon moved and fading off? Now look at the Third image, and notice how the artwork is now moved. Clearly the Third image has the Artwork on top.

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9384/exe1.png http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/968/exe2r.png

7b. To Toggle the image Layers do this. With the Move Tool select in the Tool Box, right click on the top image and select Layers in the Drop down Menu, then select Stack, and then select Reverse Layer Order as shown in the image below...

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2092/tut8.jpg

8. Once you have your Artwork ontop as the top Layer, you are now ready to scale the image to fit inside of the Glass Icon. To do this, right click on the Artwork image, select Layer from the Drop Down Menu, then select Scale Layer as shown in the image below.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6195/tut5f.jpg

9. A Scale Layer Task Box should now appear. Before imputing your size make sure the Layer size Width and Height are in Pixels. Then put in your size specifications. I use anywhere between 90-110 pixels depending upon the size of the Artwork Image. In this example the Width and Height are 95 pixels. See below images... Notice how the Artwork is now evenly sized in comparison to the Glass Icon? Play with it and adjust the Art to your liking.

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/9293/tut6.jpg http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/8468/tut7x.jpg

10. Once you have the size of your Artwork properly formated, make sure you reverse the Layer Order as you did in Step 7b. Make sure the artwork is actually on the bottom or underneath the Glass Icon and then save your work. In this example the finish project looks like this before you save it. See below image...

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/3918/tut9.jpg

11. To save your work click on File and select Save as..

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/15/tut10x.jpg

12. when the dialogue Box appears make sure you save the file in a .png format, and you can also choose the Folder to save it in...

http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/4220/tut13.jpg

13. After properly naming the file in a .png format and choosing the Folder, simply click Save. A dialogue Box will appear for you to Export the File out of Gimp. Click Export...

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/2039/tut11v.jpg

14. After exporting the file another .png Dialogue Box appears prompting you to make other modifications. After you make your selections click Save.

11. Finally, just scroll through the Icons Folder and choose the Icon you want for the selected App. Your Done!

Now add it to your home screen:

2. Select Folder Organizer item
3. Select Apps
4. Choose the application that you modified

DO THIS FOR EACH ICON THAT YOU WANT TO CHANGE!!

Although I designed roughly 100 additional icons to go with the Original Icon Pack, I must acknowledge Riptide9 and Slayer over at XDA. Rip for a kick a$$ theme concept, and Slayer for the awesome addons.
