How to get sprints hot spot to work completely (root needed)

I have been playing Halo Reach on my Xbox360 through my wireless tether app, and I have had no issues with lag whatsoever. Well at least I haven't, but the people I am playing with might. I am using CyanogenMod.... Not sure why people would have a problem getting this to work? Seems pretty cut and dry, basic networking knowledge should be enough.

Is there a reason why i cant create a hotspot using 4G? It keeps switching to 3g Hotspot.
Another question: Is tethering when you plug your phone into your laptop and the phone provides the laptop with internet? So you are using the phone like one of those internet modems that you can get from sprint/verizon/etc... that plugs in to your USB and looks like a thumb drive?

Is there something like this available for 2.3 android, i get an error or a cancellation on my recovery when i try and run 2.2 zips saying its an older version. so is there a zip for 2.3 android users?
