First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

I had to create a thread.

I am coming from tp2 this is big change for me. My first smartphone was ppc-6700 and now after spending 24 hours with this gadget I love it!

This is my first android phone and I don't think I will be missing my windows mobile 6.5. I am still new to this platform have no idea what the hell is going on. I am just browsing different forums and reading threads.

Not so thrilled about 3d stuff but the phone itself is fast and very easy to use! its like switching from toyota corolla to maserati quattroporte.

Welcome to the club...I also come from the WinMo lineage with the 6700, touch, etc. I have not looked back longingly since moving to the Evo 4G and I suspect you will be feel the same way.

Welcome. You won't believe how addictive your phone is going to get.

Same Here! Came from WM all the way back to Win CE 3.0; had HTC 6800 (Mogul) and TP2. I am stunned at how good Android is! Wake up, MS.

If you started from the HTC Apache you're still a newcomer to the market. :) Some of us started back when Handspring revolutionized the market. I don't miss WM6.5 AT ALL. I have to say the best WM device I owned was the Mogul (or the 8925 if you had GSM). All those programmable buttons and WM5 was PEPPY. I always wanted a Universal, but never was with gAyT&T long enough to get one. The StarTRK was cool too, but damn that proprietary charger.

All I can say is good thing you never got an HD2,

With a phone that you can flash WM6.5, Android 2.x, WP7, and ubuntu you would never have slept again!

But I feel you, I've been on the Sensation and hanging out in this forum lately and this latest installment by HTC is nothing less that pure awesome!

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

Me too. Mogul was best and worst was original tp.

HD2 was awesome device very versatile. I think this newer phones are great right out of the box. In past we had to spent countless hours tweaking and installing that perfect .cab (which I loved) but now android is my next addiction.

Once you've settled, you will wish you switched a year ago ;).

I came from a heavy WiMo background as well... left TP2 to get EVO 4G, then Nexus S and now EVO 3D.

If you post this in the Arrive forum, it will lead to lots of bashing and in the end, the thread will be closed.

If you dont believe, then ...

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

I just came over from a TP2. Had a heat crack and with having to spend $100 for replacement, it was a no brainer to spend another $100 and get the latest and greatest phone. Loved my TP2 and free wifi hotspot and custom ROMS. But 3G was slow, and the phone was getting old tech wise. Now I absolutely LOVE my Evo 3D! And the Android Marketplace has a dizzying number of apps to download and play with! I'm glad I switched! And when I can get 4G the speed is amazingly fast compared to 3G.

my TP2 as been demoted to a charging dock for my Evo4g...to bad the 3vo doesn't have the same battery, but the bat life is much better than my og bat in my 1st gen Evo.

Welcome. I had used HTC touch, ppc6700, mogul, touch pro, and touch pro2. So I have spent many years with wm and I loved it at the time. I went through 3 android devices and will never consider buying another wm device. Already looking foward to ice cream sandwich.

I'm on the same boat with OP. I started with the HP IPAQ ppc with an attached modem for mobile data. Then I moved up to a Siemen SX66. Eventually evolved to an HTC Touch Diamond and followed by HTC TP2.

From the TP2 to 3V0......it feels like I've been under a rock all my life! I love the 3V0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

Haha, yea. I went from Mogul -> Touch Pro/Treo Pro -> Touch Pro 2 -> EVO4G -> EVO3D. Came a long way in 4 years.

The TP2 was a disappointment lost flash, and same processor, although the KB was second to none, too bad the system was so shitty now that I compare to android.

I still remember the major boost in speed/ram and such from the Mogul to TP (especially on silent's rom; one of the best IMO), then it just seems pathetic compared to even compared to the EVO4G, and is a joke compared to the EVO3D.

I'm also loving the new shutter button for the camera, so much nicer than on screen shutter button.

What did you think of the Nexus S? I was all set to get one until I heard about the radio/hardware issues.

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

I started my smart phone journey with the treo 650> treo 700p> made the switch to windows after playing with a friends mogul. did some homework on cutomizations of windows mobile and I was hooked. proceeded to the tp and then the tp2 but after years of freezing and sluggishness I made the jump to the evo 4g. I, like most, thought I would miss my great hardware keyboard and I did switched back to the tp2 a month after having the evo 4g but once I got back into it and saw how much I had back tracked as far as speed and functionality I repurchased another evo and after some adjustments( mostly adjusting to the onscreen keyboard )I havent looked back since I simply love android and my evo 4g didnt even have to give it up it worked just fine but Im a spec junkie so I couldnt resist upgrading to the 3d

It is funny that alot of people from TP2 comes to the 3D and not the Arrive. I am glad I choose the 3D. I will never go back to slider out keyboard. I am going to stay with Android OS.

I know some of you want to sync your Outlook to Android. Good luck on that. All I do is sync with Google server and that is a cloud I like.

I think I've finally got a handle on Android and it is a very powerful OS but if I could have gotten the EVO 3D with WP7 on it I would have. WP7 seems much more battery friendly and the way it handles exchange accounts particularly if you have more than one is top notch. That being said Android hardware is far superior to anything you can get for WP7 - particularly on Sprint - they seem to have chosen one of the smallest screened, bulkiest WP7 phones available. The Arrive is probalby the last WP7 hardare I would have picked if I was getting WP7. Android has a number of distinct advantages but I use my phone for 2 things primarily - a phone and accessing e-mail, calendar and contacts from Exchange. I tried touchdown and it still is far behind WP7 as a calendar/contact/email platform.

However if you use it for many other things I can definitely see the attraction of Android. It is extremely flexible. I went with the EVO 3D because the hardware seems robust - not for the OS and I didn't go with the Arrive as the hardware sucks donkey balls. ;)

wp7 does not need top of the line out of this world hardware to provide a good user experience. I just recently loaded the mango beta onto my arrive and everything is flying even more so than on NoDo. but since this is the android section ill leave it at that but yea I've come from WM too starting on an ipaq h1910 then Dell axim x51v and finally to TP1 and 2.

IMHO - a good experience with a phone includes a large screen, a slim design, plenty of expandable storage, 4G for tethering, BT 3.x or 4.x to reduce battery drain are part of the good experience. The Arrive is severely lacking in those areas - notice I didn't mention the processor - but all the other items that make a phone top of the line.

lot of things I could say to this but it has no place here in the android section. so I'll reserve this discussion for another thread elsewhere.

Unless MS gets a real "app store" in the very near future, they are done in the Mobile market. I was one of the few that kinda liked the TP1, but it was a constant battle keeping it from crashing.

I bought a cheap android tablet and noticed a TON of apps that I could easily put to use on a daily basis for my work. So I knew my next phone would be android based. The one big reason I went with Winmo on my last phone was the fact I could put a standalone GPS app on it. Since I could do the same on the 3vo, no reason to stay anymore.

Coming from a TP2, I am amazed at how fast and smooth the 3vo responds to user input. I thought I would never be able to do without the hard keyboard but the android voice recognition makes texting easy. I was in the dark ages with WM and did not know it.

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

Well i actually recognize a lot of your usernames from the WM forums and yes I went through all the WM phones and liked them a lot. I even tried the Arrive and I will admit that Microsoft is on the right track but not there yet, instead of making a good OS they are trying to compete with Apple or be like them. One of the great things about WM was you could plug your phone in and transfer files. Now you have to go through the Zune app.

Android is on the right track. My EVO 3D is the fastest phone I've ever owned. With swype I no longer need a physical keyboard. As of right now HTC is at the top of phone makers they now set the standard. I don't look at the 3D as a gimmick but a smart marketing angle. 3D is the newest technology going right now so why not take advantage of it. You can only share your 3D photos with other 3D users so look at how many people have bought more then one. All in all I'm loving this phone and until they give me a reason I will stay with HTC for all my future phones.

I agree with "Microsoft is on the right track but not there yet" I also like TF3D on older WM htc devices. The whole 3D is not bad at all you..its like you have that really cool feature in you car but you are not going to use it everyday. its fast yes! I have not restart the phone and its been a week.

I just switched from HTC Mogul I had for 5 years and Im amazed at the speed of the evo 3D. I drain the battery every day because Im always on it playing around and searching for apps and using maps just for fun..

Im an HTC user for life. I forgot my mogul was in my swim trunk pockets and went swimming and saw it on bottom of swimming pool. 4 days later the mogul came alive and worked perfectly

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

I have been using HTC phones for a while now. I just recently upgraded from the Sprint TP2 to the EVO 3D. I like the phone but I am not in love with it. There are some things I miss from my TP2. Mainly I am referring to the way things worked. I was a heavy Excel user on my TP2 I got the Polaris App on the Android and sent myself a file from my TP2 via bluetooth opened the file to see most of the fields were missing info. I am a heavy Voice Recorder user and I noticed although the voice recorder looks exactly the same as it does on the TP2 there is one thing missing. It doesn't allow you to pause while recording. I was always able to pause a recording and restart it where I left off. Not on on this phone I can't. The people widget has groups and one of the groups is VIP. I added the names I wanted to my VIP list then it asks for you to set the default action for this widget. I add the cell phone number I want for my VIPs and it seems as though it is set then if you leave that screen and come back the icon for the phone is gone and when you click on their picture, it asks you to once again set the default action for this widget. What gives? This VIP widget looks the same as it did on my TP2 the difference is it worked on my TP2 I set the number I want the phone to dial for that person and it worked never had to reset it again. With regards to text messaging, I noticed everytime I would go into a thread to see the conversation and come back out the phone would say Message Draft Saved. I didn't type anything so why is it saving it to draft? Now for all of these issues I have contacted HTC and really the answers I got have not helped. I still have some of them as outstanding to be resolved. What I discovered on my own was that when I add a signature to my text messages and you open the thread and come out it saves it to draft. The mere insertion of the signature makes the app think you are typing. That never happened on my TP2. Now I am not going back to my TP2 because it had so many glitches it was slow to respond to my commands it was beyond annoying. However, I want this brand new phone to exceed what my TP2 did and then some. There are some things that blow my TP2 out of the water, but in the most simple of things it doesn't. The speaker volume is atrocious. My corporate Blackberry is louder than this phone. I don't know why HTC phones are so low. This is not my first HTC to experience low volume. by now HTC should get a hint. Has anyone else experienced these issues with their 3D?

Re: First time Android user (hardcore WM fan)

Thanks for the info! I'm on TP2 and getting 3VO tomorrow. I was just reading different threads to get an idea of any potential issues before I jump. My TP2 was a decent phone but I hate the sluggish CPU (feels like TP2 always has something better to do than I what I asked it to do) although overclocked EnergyROM helped. Also tired of running a dead, abandoned OS. The whole "I woke up on a derelict spaceship" feeling is why I refuse to even consider WM7.

But very glad to see ex-TP2 owners happy with their 3VO's.

One thing I find amazing with Android OS is all these services that are running. Things like Spiderman 3D, Gmail(I didnt set this up for email), yah Sync stuff which I didnt do! all runs even after I have done kill -9, etc

You might not be aware of it until you install a Task App thing, then you will know.

I m going to root it and get rid of all these junk.
