installing from apk file

Ok, I really hate having to ask this question here but I've had the HTC Incredible since last Friday. Ten years will WinMo but I don't want to take a chance of messing up a new phone. How does one install a new app using the apk file? I've downloaded the Swype apk but I need to install it. Is it as simple as just clicking on the file once I move it to the phone? Where on the phone should it be moved to?

I put swype on my sd card then got astro file manager, went to the sd card using astro and clicked on it and selected open app manager and it did the rest. you will want to go into settings/applications (in android)and make sure that the Unknown sources button it checked before you try to install.

Re: installing from apk file

Here's what you do:

0. Home>Menu>Settings>Applications>Check Unknown sources
1. As far as I could find, you need an SD card. While not rooted, your phone's file explorers can't see the same contents on the 8GB memory that your computer can transfer to.. You may be able to email the APK to yourself, log in to gmail through the Internet browser, and download/install the attached APK.
2. I use OI File Manager to browse my SD card -- found in the Market app.
3. Find the file in OI file manager and click to install.
4. For Swype, you need to go to Home>Menu>Settings>Language and Keyboards>check the box next to swype
5. Open any text box (email, google search, etc.) and long press the box, select Input Mode, and select Swype.

Hope it helps,
jakewill

Re: installing from apk file

Thanks to both of you! I'll do it tomorrow as I'm about to go spend time with the wife.
