Keep data connection active when on a call?

I tried several ways of searching for this, but is there a way to keep the data connection active when on a phone call... for example if running an IM client or while tethered?

Hope this is in the right place, thanks in advance for any help/advice.

cdma technology cannot support voice and data at the same time.

Re: Keep data connection active when on a call?

No because the radios don't support seperate EVDO and 1x channels and I think that is the reason why when you get a call you are stuck without data unless you use wi-fi or use Skype for making phone calls.

Yes. Data goes to sleep while you answer an incoming call. When you end the call, Data continues from where it left off.

Only GSM can do that at this time. It is the one feature that i enjoyed about my tenure at AT&t. I wonder if this will be possible with Sprint's Supermagicalohmygodholycrapcanyoubelievetheyhaveth isfreakinfastsupermegacrazy 4g network, though.

GSM can use voice and data simultaneously. Perhaps my quoting was less than spectacular on that one.

You can get data through wifi while on a voice call
