VOIP over Wifi w/ Diamond

I'm looking to use my Diamond (cdma/sprint) to connect to the wifi at my deployed location to make VOIP calls to people back home. it seems most users here ,that I found through search, use the newest version of Skype and using something like troca2 or autoswitch to make the sound come out of the earpiece instead of the speakerphone and sometimes nimbuzz for ease of use with other programs. I would use a bluetooth to get around using another program to make it work, but i'm sure the use of bluetooth in uniform outside is the same as it is at my normal base.

i have a few questions i couldn't find answers to here:
1) Should i be using the stock sprint rom or a custom rom to make this a easier option then booting up my netbook w/ a headset every time i want to make a call?
2) anyone have experience using there phone in this way? I'm trying to find a easier way then a netbook/headset in case wifi is not available in my room and i have to go outside somewhere to do this.
3) is Skype the best solution for a Diamond?

Thanks for any replies as i'm just looking for anything that may be helpful while i try to make this work the way I want with my diamond this weekend before I leave.

Wirelessly posted (HTC Diamond: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) Sprint MP6950SP)

I recommend using the sprint shipped rom or a custom 6.1 rom for maximum memory, compatability, and stability.

I would use either Skype or Nimbuzz for the calls. Both should work.

Bluetooth should work if you have a decent connection and pairing with your device is solid.

Thank You For Serving!!

Good Luck To You!! :thumbleft:

Thanks for the info, sounds like as long as the wifi doesn't suck i'll be able to pull this off.

I haven't tried it, but Portsip for WM 6 would work with voip providers that allow you to BYOD or use softphones. VOIPo allows me to use softphone, so does many, many other providers (voip.ms, etc).

Just tested: PortSIP worked over EVDO. It should work fine over WiFi. You just need to get a VOIP provider.

Hey lost_,

I am so glad to see your test over EVDO works. But I have a few questions about it:

1. I am on Sprint network, can I use Sprint's data plan for PortSIP calling?

2. I am using iTalkbb as my home VOIP phone, need I use this to make PortSIP work?

3. Does this call consume your voice minutes?

4. Could you tell me how to configure PortSIP on my Sprint HTC TP2? I didn't see manual on its official website.

Thanks a lot! ;-)

Re: VOIP over Wifi w/ Diamond

1) Sure, that's what I used, but if your question is about the price, that depends on your plan. I have SERO with unlimited data.

2) Check with iTalkbb if they allow BYOB SoftPhone. But, if not, there are plenty of VOIP providers that do.

3) Data only.

4) Just configure it to connect (menu, register or menu, re-register) it to your VOIP provider's server and port number, using your user name and password (you can opt to save it so it would auto login). The SIP port # is usually 5060.
