Text messaging in newer ROM's

I am using an older 6.1 ROM made with the 19974 system.

When I receive a text message with my older ROM I can just tap on the message and it will automatically go into the threaded reply screen with the keyboard already popped on and ready to go.

But on these newer ROM's when I hit reply it goes into this threaded message screen but you have to tap on the rectangle box to get the keyboard to pop up. I don't like that and would like to get it back to the old style. Any Ideas?

I have made sure that the keyboard is on auto deploy and all that but nothing seems to help. It's not a HUGE deal but just an annoyance that keeps me from using newer ROM's. Thanks
