Re: A Linux version of the xv6700....

a great starting point is http://www.kernel.org/ it has links to some great how_tos and compile the kernel. The kernel is the heart of linux system it is compiled to the processor used. A distro is just all the packages and directories used. Great pratice and reward is to put linux on an old PC and build a kernel for it. all the tools are free and usually come on the install cd for linux(basically any distro) I personally like mandriva but since all the work is in UBUNTU that would probably be a great place to start. The great thing about linux is everything is free. You can teach yourself from compiling kernels to system administration by just reading for free! You can boot linux from several different kernels, so you can try to boot a new expermental kernel and if it does not work, you can reboot from the good kernel, and I have had many crash and just totally hose out!!!!! But I was so happy after I compiled my first working kernel!

I have seen this project for a while, and while it has been stagnant, have you actually loaded up the kernel via HaRET? Are you some hardcore kernel hacker or an electronics salesman at Sears? I really doubt you're both.
Geeze bud i wasn't trying to be condescending!

I followed the instructions here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...ame=HTC_Apache

It isn't that hard if i recall correctly. It was a rainy day and I was bored

Oh and I sell electronics at kmart. I'm still in school I have no programming experience at all.

Well I wasted a grip of time trying to do this on Virtual PC 2007 until I realized it won't support usb devices. So now I gotta start all over on my dual boot laptop. AAARRRRGGGHHHHH111111

VMWare does support USB if you want to go that route...

Re: A Linux version of the xv6700....

I thought about it, but I'll just bring my laptop to work. Virtual machines are nice, but it will probably work better on actual hardware. It eliminates another variable that could cause a problem.

Re: A Linux version of the xv6700....

you can also check out DSL. it is a version of linux only 50 meg, and designed for micro devices. that might be able to be modded to run a mobile
