The character count only shows up when you create a new message from the inbox screen, and does not show up when replying to a message in the "chat."
No, there is no way to "turn it back on"
So, if the message count is an absolute necessity then I suggest using the other threaded apps or just creating a new message everytime instead of replying.

thanks is this a wm6.1 problem or just the apache version
