theming, rooting and nexus

does the nexus require root access to theme the os? i guess this is more of a general android question, but i am not sure. say i wanted to change the color of the taskbar from that "light gray" to "glass blue" or change the color of the on screen keyboard...do mods like this require me to root the phone?

also, is it a possibility some day that the bootloader could be relocked? or is it simply out of the question and will never be accomplished?

i ask all this because i will most likely be paying retail for my nexus and am not quite sure i'd be willing to risk rooting and voiding my warranty. however i have never had any problems with my phones, so i could always take a chance. but now i probably just jinxed myself...sigh

one last thing. would i be able to get asurion insurance for the nexus through verizon like i had for my tp2?

sorry for all the questions, but just wanna know what i am getting into when i get the phone

Re: theming, rooting and nexus

I would look here for theming possibilities.

Everything else I am not sure of, I am thinking from what i have heard the repairs have to go through Google anyways so I am not sure. Look into rooting, and if it is easy to go stock (remove root) then I would say go for it. I haven't heard of any bricks caused by achieving root, but as always the risk is on you.

Re: theming, rooting and nexus

awesome, thanks for the link, i will check it out. yeah i heard that to root you need to unlock the bootloader, and that is the part that is irreversible at the moment. i'll look through that link though and see if what they are doing requires root access. thanks again

Re: theming, rooting and nexus

AFAIK there is no way of relocking the bootloader as of now. I'm sure it'll be possible one day, but the T-Mobile version has only been out for a couple of months and the At&t version just came out this week.

I'm not rooting my At&t version I just got this week because I don't want to void my warranty. I haven't tried to theme anything yet though.

Re: theming, rooting and nexus

thanks. yeah i wasn't sure if it was a possiblity or not to relock it, but i sure hope they figure it out. can't wait to get my nexus, let alone mod it. i've got a lot of learning to do though. in a way i wish i could stick with winmo cause i know how to work it, but android...its a whole new adventure, time to learn
