Is WP7 right for me?

I have an HTC Imagio running stock rom WM 6.5. Should I switch if Verizon comes out first quarter with WP7?

With WM 6.5 I can/have:

1. Copy and paste, which I use often when needing a password from SplashID to enter into a browser among other things

2. Tether to laptop using PDANet

3. Multitask (have at least a few programs open before it starts to freeze anyway!)

4. Free BING navigation

If I can't do any of the above with WP7 I'll probably wait for future versions.

Re: Is WP7 right for me?

Then it looks like your answer is no...
Not on release 1.0 at least... But you're a smartphoneguru so you already knew that... lol.

1. By the time it comes to Verizon... Copy/paste might be available.
2. No tethering yet.
3. Multitask coming just not all there yet. Only with native apps.
4. I understand no navigation on Bing for WP7 yet. But not sure. Aslo will depend on what Verizon decides to do to cripple the phone so they can sell you their own navigation package.

Probably future versions will meet most of your requirements... But tethering might be the last one to come to WP7 unless our friends at XDA figure something out.

Re: Is WP7 right for me?

I agree that the answer is no for now, but it depends on when their devices are released and when the update comes.

I'm hoping for copy/paste and voice nav in Bing Maps among other things.

Verizon can't really cripple anything in WP7, nobody can. All they can do is add their own apps on top of what's already there, that's what At&t did. At&t Nav comes installed, but to use it you have to pay for it. You can uninstall it though. I uninstalled all but a couple of At&t apps.

You listed some features that you use, but what do you actually use your phone for? that would be a better determination of if WP7 is right for you.

Are you big on media (music, videos, pics, etc), games, and social networking? If so, then WP7 will probably be a good fit.

Or are you a business user? Android might be a better fit right now.

Right now, WP7 is geared towards the media and social networking crowd rather than the business user. With a few enhancements, it could be a productive phone too.

You might want to read my editorial on the homepage too.

Re: Is WP7 right for me?

Well, sounds like I should stick it out with WM 6.5. I use the phone mostly for business...phone calls, email with Exchange and text messages. I rarely play any games (Bubble Breaker to pass the time). The WM Facebook app is working again and does the trick for me. Opera Mini is a nice browser.

WM 6.5 would be perfect for me if it had a snappier processor 1gig and a camera with flash.

I'm not sure about switching to Android. I think I'd have to install Touchdown to use MSExchange.

Re: Is WP7 right for me?

Just tough it out... Also Windows Embeded devices should be coming to sprint. I know Motorola has one on the way. It's kinda ugly but at least it will be a business phone. You should look into it.

Well Exchange will work with it and phone calls and texting obviously too.

Let me guess, you looked at all the wp7 reviews, found the 4 biggest gripes about wp7, then made this post....

There is a winmo phone on Verizon with 1ghz..the LG Fathom...

As for exchange support on Android, most have built in exchange support...

Re: Is WP7 right for me?

These are common gripes of people who haven't picked up the phone and used it. Yes, they're valid gripes but in most cases they are just that - gripes...

1. Copy and paste, which I use often when needing a password from SplashID to enter into a browser among other things
No... it's not available but will probably be right around the time it drops on Verizon or Sprint

2. Tether to laptop using PDANet
You can activate tethering on some phones - namely the LG Optimus 7 and the Samsung Focus - those have been given the ability with a MFG Service hack...

3. Multitask (have at least a few programs open before it starts to freeze anyway!)
There is no multitasking and about the best thing you'll see around multitasking is tombstoning - basically the ability to have an app paused... the back button becomes the app switcher and the app is resumed when you go back.

4. Free BING navigation
Nope, it's not there yet... it has a great a turn by turn solution with Bing built in - it's pretty nice - I use it on my phone for driving directions. I click on the address in the mail client and it pops a map with turn-by-turn navigation. Is it coming? I'd assume so fairly quickly in an update

If I can't do any of the above with WP7 I'll probably wait for future versions.
You have to remember - this is not like WM 6.5 or an Android device for the most part - the OS will be updated by Microsoft... no the carriers, not the OEMs... by Microsoft which means updates will come fast and furious.

Provided I came from a WM6.5 device... go to the AT&T store and just use it - there's nothing on the market like it currently. I am a heavy business user... the phone is quite awesome.
