Re: Htc os?

Personally, I would love to have a phone that ran Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop as the OS, (and had an Ix86 processor). The capabilities of the phone would be virtually unlimited, and anything I needed could easily be aquired with apt-get. Now that would be my dream phone. . I don't think it's ever going to happen though.

While neat, all the hardware drivers would need to be written, memory would have to be vastly upgraded (Like running it off the SD Card), and it would have to be written to run on an ARM Processor...

Battery life would be 2 seconds.

If you want Linux/unix derivative OS, why not an Android phone? The possibility is already there.

Because I want apt-get which is found in Debian and systems derived from Debian. Currently, there are over 32000 applications available for Debian x86, and if I run a new system besides WinMo, I want not only customisability, (so iPhone is out), but also application availability. (so SymbianOS is out).

Ahh. While there isn't a Debian based Phone OS, you can run Debian from within Android. Debian supports ARM EABI, which is the underlying architecture for Android. I've seen over on the android forums that they have Jail Broken HTC G1's running debian, and there are even instructions for folks who want to use some of the more popular GUI's. It's a small screen so I'm not sure how useful that is.... but it's amazing that with a little tweaking these little phones can run the same software / OS as full blown desktops.

Re: Htc os?

Would I be able to apt-get OpernOffice.org3-enuUS in Debian for ARM? I would love the apt-get repository available, but I wouldn't want a neutered version of it. If I could have a full *nix distribution on my phone, that would truly kick ***. It would be like a pocket laptop, but fully featured.

Not sure on the specific application, but I'm sure you can dig up that answer on the Android forums (not on this site). It really appears that the folks over there have made leaps and bounds into getting full featured Linux distro on their phones. Me, while I find that sort of thing neat and useful to some, I don't need, so I don't really delve that deeply into those topics so I can't describe anymore than what I have already conveyed..

I'm sure if they have gotten most of your popular GUI's up and running on Android phones (KDE, GNOME, etc), certainly they have Open Office.

One of the greatest features of Android being based on Linux is your control over the command line. Once the phone is jail broken, the possibilities seem endless.
