NSA-Approved Windows Mobile Phone

That right Ladies and Gentlemen. Here's the scoop....(and keep reading....the best part is at the end)

Barak Obama is a BlackBerry junkie. But presidents aren't allowed to have cell phones. So, not only is he the first black president, but now he will be the first president to have a cell phone. How you ask?

General Dynamics, maker of the F-16 and lots of other cool stuff that goes BOOM, has made the first NSA-approved mobile phone. It's called the Sectera Edge. It's also ruggedized because it's also available to the military. It costs around $3,350 with no add-ons.

The part I thought was cool, because I'm an "IT Guy" was how they deal with the "secure" part of it. It turns out that the NSA has a new program/initiative for mobile device encryption called the Secure Mobile
Environment Portable Electronic Device (SME PED). It works in conjunction with the SIPRNET...the DoD's secure intranet. The phone has a built-in smartcard reader. You slide you CAC ID card in the bottom of the phone to authenticate to SIPRNET, and then all data and voice is encrypted.

Of course there are special email servers you have to have....but the device works on all major carriers as there are several version of the phone. All device versions are "World Phones". Available on Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, AllTel, Orange, Rodgers....and everything else.

But the best part....it runs on Windows Mobile!

Get all the juicy details on General Dynamic's Sectera Edge product page.

Re: NSA-Approved Windows Mobile Phone

Does it come with 2.5 or 3.5 mm jack?

Actually that's very cool. However, I'm sure that the good people at Fort Meade will be able to "listen in" to these secured converstations.

late,
Coz

Oh snap! The phone works on ALL CARRIERS. There's a module you swap out to switch between carriers!

It even has encrypted Windows Messenger...SICK!

They even left Windows Media Player on it....AHAHAHAHA

Re: NSA-Approved Windows Mobile Phone

It's confirmed by Engadget:

At Robert Gibbs' first press conference as President Obama's Press Secretary, the most important and heated debate of our time has been put to rest. According to Gibbs, Obama will be able to keep his BlackBerry, though only a limited number of senior staff and personal contacts will have access to his email address, and the data on the handheld will be subject to the Presidential Records Act. There was no mention of the NSA or the Sectera Edge, though he does mention some enhanced security. In Gibbs' words:
"The President has a BlackBerry through a compromise that allows him to stay in touch with senior staff and a small group of personal friends in a way that use will be limited and the security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate, but to do so effectively and to do so in a way that's protected."
Finally, a clear indication that for the first time in the 21st century, the President of the United States will act like it's the 21st century. You can watch it all go down in the video after the break -- just crank it to about 45:30. Now, on to this economic stuff we keep hearing about...
