Outlook OTA sync question.

I don't use Outlook, but have an acquaintance who does & is looking into getting a smartphone or Blackberry.

The question is, while I know the PPCs will sync just about everything from Outlook via USB, isn't it true that they only sync emails "over the air?" That meaning, if this fella' wants to check his Outlook calender, he needs to "sync up" before leaving the office, right?

Or, will it sync everything from Outlook OTA?

Do Blackberries do this?

I use a completely different set-up, so I've never encountered this.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Oh... yes I searched, and yes, I HOPE I put this in the right place!

Re: Outlook OTA sync question.

A PPC doesn't sync to "Outlook" over the air, it syncs to a mail server over the air. Usually someone using Outlook is getting their mail from a Microsoft Exchange server. If this is the case, then it is likely you can sync your e-mail, calendars, and contacts from the Exchange server to your PPC over the air, this is called "Exchange Active Sync". If he can get to his e-mail through the web and it is a Microsoft Exchange web site, then there are ways even if corporate IT doesn't support Exchange Active Sync (Google "emoze" or "seven"). The best bet if your friend wants to sync to his work e-mailis/calendar/contacts is to talk to his IT department and see what over the air sync mechanisms they support.

Re: Outlook OTA sync question.

rshyffer pretty much covered everthing. I'd recommend your friend go with Windows Mobile over Blackberry simply because you have to pay extra to get the BIS plan to use data. Unless your friends work place uses BES then he/she won't have a choice but to go with Blackberry.
