Ringer codec

I know that this has been covered multiple times however I have yet to find any insight.

It seems that most if not all HTC devices running WM5 are able to play *.m4a files yet the Treo700wx can not. Shouldn't we be able to pull the codec from an HTC device and install it on the WX in order to gain *m4a playback functionality?
