Recover photos from 4s stuck in recovery mode?

Novice needs help, please. I have an iPhone 4s that I hooked up to my desktop for the first time after owning it for 4 months because the memory was running out of room and I wanted to back up my photos. The computer asked if I wanted to update the software, I said yes, and now my phone is bricked, stuck in recovery mode. I can get it working again, but it will wipe everything clean, including ~700 photos (I have two little kids, so yes, I took that many pics of mostly them in 4 months, too much, but anyway...). I set up iCloud just 6 weeks ago and I did not know that photos taken prior to that time would not automatically move to the cloud. Thus, 400 or so pics are potentially lost. The million dollar question is, of course, how can I restore/retrieve these pics? Thank you for your time.

I don't know how it worked, but it did! TinyUmbrella Got my phone right out of recovery mode and back to where I could back up my photos etc. The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
Download links are on the right.

Well do not worry about the recovery your photos. Because iPhone give the feature of recovery data here. log in to iTuen and you will get the option of recovery data application. Download it and then run on your phone. Then after restart your phone and start recovery.

Try to put your iPhone 4 in DFU mode and then restore it.
You can try these steps below:
1. Try another USB cord.
2. Restart your computer for a try.
3. Hold the power button, it might restart your iPhone.
4. Update your iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPhone.
If iTunes can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help > run diagnostics.
On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPhone and then restore it.
Moreover, you can also get your iPhone out of recovery mode directly with some third-part software.

If you sync your iPhone to iTunes before and make backup, it is two ways for you to recover the photos from iPhone.
I: Directly Recover Deleted Photos from iPhone 4/3GS
II: Recover Photos from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS from iTunes Backup
Have a try to scan your data.

If you backup to cloud, this method will help you.
The difficulty in restoring iCloud data from a back up is that the back up is older than the current version on iCloud and anything that is restored gets removed again when an iCloud sync occurs or directly restore lost photos from iPhone 4/4s/5 without backup

1. Ensure the device is connected to your local network.
2. Start the restore from iCloud back up.
3. Allow the devices settings to restore (watch for the confirmation of completion).
4. As the apps begin to restore pull the connection to your router WAN port (the one that goes to the telephone point).
5. Wait for the time out confirmation.
6. Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn off contact syncing (keep contacts when prompted).
Reconnect the router to the internet and let the restore process complete.
7. Delete any iCloud contacts from iCloud.com on a computer.
Navigate to settings > iCloud and turn on contact syncing (merge contacts when prompted).

Only if you have a backup, to restore from your camera roll, that contains the deleted photos for iPhone 4s. Otherwise, they are gone.
The iPhone camera roll is not designed for photo storage. These photos should be regularly imported to your computer, just like photos from any digital camera. If you want photos on your iPhone, sync them to your phone.
