All Iphones have a sim card although this is for your service to be active.
If your phone isn't jailbroken when you don't have a sim in it you will see the emergency call screen as you are now. I'd check here first to learn what that means and what you need to do. :) Once you have done that then you can listen to all the music you want without a sim card as far as I know ;) Hope that helps!

If you buy an iphone from ATT officially they will put a SIM card in it. If you buy it from a 3rd party it will not. You can use it as an Ipod touch if you want.

I know which screen you are talking about. What happened is you (or someone) fully reset the phone. Now you can do one of two things.

1) put any sim card in the phone (borrow a friend's if you don't have one) and plug it into your computer, fire up Itunes, and it will work from there (you can take out the SIM after doing this)

2) jailbreak the phone. If it was updated to 3.1.3 (sounds like that's what happened) then it will be just a little harder, but still possible. Once jailbroken you can download awesome 3rd party apps, have access to the file system, and change the theme, as well as other things (even without a SIM card)

check out this thread on jailbreaking. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=112607
