Re: how do you backup contacts?

Not sure of the easiest way...but I wanted to express how hard it is to have this done in the stores.....

When you go into a store to have your contacts swapped, they will use the cellbrite machine. Today was the first day our store tried to do a contact transfer from the old phone to the new one....let me tell you. After going through all of the staff in the store, including me , wideawake had to come figure it all out. It's not easy!!! A lot harder than a normal transfer on windows mobile.

I wouldn't recommend trying to have your contacts swapped in a store in other words!!!

Easiest way for me was to set up a gmail account and use googlesync to sync the contacts from my old phone (touch pro) to gmail. Then when I got the phone and entered my gmail account info, it retrieved it for me.

Re: how do you backup contacts?

Myself, I would rather do without the security and privacy issues of blindly dumping contact information to a website where, if you read the terms of use, those contacts become the property of someone else.

Not a very smart thing to do in my book.

So, how does this back up the contacts on the TP so you can put them on the Droid? Is there REALLY a command prompt in WM? Where is it?

How does it know to format the backup file so the Droid can use it?

How does one then use this file to put the contacts on the Droid?

Sorry, but just typing out what may or may not be a command line for a real or imagined application is not all that helpful.

Re: how do you backup contacts?

ok this is what i did to easily set mine up. this was based from a vzw tp2 to the droid eris.

1. made a gmail account since was needed anyways for droid
2. manually entered the contact information (i even added email) into contacts tab on gmail through your pc for faster typing.
3. once contacts are added you are good to go.
4. set up that gmail account on your device and choose the option to sync your contacts and you are good to go....

this is the easiest most straight forward way of doing this in my opinion... why not take the time now and do it right so whenever you need to start over you have all your contacts auto-synced even after flashing of a rom with no other programs or apps needed.

So, how do your contacts feel about you giving Google their names and phone numbers?

Ambulance chasers are going to have a heyday with this...

I wasn't asked how to backup contacts from a TP and restore them to Android, but it shouldn't be too hard at all.

If you're concerned about what Google will be doing with your contact information, read their privacy policy. If they say they won't sell the numbers and then do, you're positioned to score some cash via our court system.

Edit:

Asked 15 random ones via text. They don't care.
