This is excellent news. But doesn't unlocking the device still void the warranty? I have a Thunderbolt, but if I unlock the bootloader and root the device, I'll still void the warranty, won't I?

Well... Unless yo unroot when you take it in for service. Which is why I don't root... Too much of a hassle.

Rooting voids warranty. I hope they give us a way to unlock the evo 3d and the sensation. I'm not on either carrier, but i do like to read about development on the phones. I wonder if they would give us info on how to unlock the incredible2, It seems that phone is not unlockable or just the support is not that big.
