A question about Gmail notifications

how can I get gmail to show the number of messages I have on the icon instead of the top of the status bar?

It is the by default feature of the gmail mail service as if you receive any mail and if you are working on some other site in other tab then it will automatically shows like this

Gmail - Inbox (4).........
