What didn't work? This is a straight forward method to rooting a 2.1 droid and flashing a froyo rom. This method is not new and has been done successfully many times.

Probably a silly question, but does this process wipe your device?

Coming from a Windows Mobile phone I am still trying to grasp some of the processes for rooting and what ones will wipe data and what ones will not. Many of the guides don't even mention it ether way.

Flashing an sbf file will wipe your phone. Flashing a rom can, but doesn't have to. A rom via a backup(nandroid) will wipe whereas with an update.zip type rom installation, wiping is at your discretion.

Wiping with Nandroid is at your discretion also. If you do not restore the Data section then it will not be wiped.
