App idea for developers: side camera button

i'm not a developer but i had an idea for a tweak/app that would be useful to me and hopefully a lot of other people. I just came home from a vacation and took a ton of pictures with my Evo and grew frustrated by the lack of a dedicated camera button. i was wondering if it would be possible to make one of the volume buttons take the picture. I would want this only when the camera app is open of course. I know the volume buttons can be re-routed because of how they are used to scroll up and down through web pages in the Dolphin HD browser. Can anyone tell me if this would be possible or if its already been done? i've done some research into this and didn't come up with anything. I thought i would ask the great group of developers we have here at PPCG. Thanks everyone!!! (HTC Evo)

I want to map the volume buttons to change the brightness. It is bad to have to burn the retinas when you turn the phone on at night. Would be much nicer to have some kind of hardware button to turn the brightness down before burning the retinas....

@Chris... haha droid X. does look like a pretty badass phone though! however i would rather my Evo... Any developers or anybody out there know if this is possible or has been done?
