You will need to unlock your phone first. After you unlock the phone you will be able to try new roms and radios. You dont need Wm6.5, and you dont need to change roms if you dont want to. You can just try a new radio after you unlock the phone.
*note, unlocking you phone will void your warranty, and will need to relock it if you need to return it.
