EDGE - a battery saver or not?

So i read that being on EDGE instead of HSDPA will save battery power. But will it really work in the long run? I assume the amount of battery power needed to be in EDGE is less than HSDPA, but if i am to open a web site which is 100kb in size, on EDGE it will take 10 seconds to download while on HSDPA it will take about 1.

Basically, whenever i dont need to use the internet for anything that requires high speed, i use EDGE, but im not sure if it is benefiting me in any way. Any help is welcome.
