I wouldn't necessarily say that...GSM is plain 'ol 3G because that's how they classify their 3G network to their customers. EVDO is still a "3G" network because of the speed classification. EVDO is just what CDMA carriers call their 3G network.

"3G" was actually first launched by a CDMA carrier in I blieve Korea in 2002.

The first commerical launch of 3G in the US was by a CDMA carrier (Monet Mobile Networks), followed by Verizon with their 1xEVDO data network.

EDIT: Just saw that you had 3G=EVDO.
