I have two solutions
FIRST, look for pimbackup, run it, backup all your contacts and messages, and hardreset the phone by pressing reset and the front two buttons that have a dot on them (they are on the face, i forgot what they are called
).
When the phone is reset, simply press the reset button again before the 3 second customization timer runs out. You can also install a no2chem rom, thats my best suggestion.
SECOND, use TCPMP for media play back... this way you can assign scroll to volume. To save extra battery life and not leave TCPMP play back, i suggest you download wktask and set backlight off to something convenient, but remember to cut the battery saver option off that cuts the phone off after a certain time limit.
