If you're new to android, you'll find exchange implementation was an afterthought. Try K9 or another mail program for better exchange support than HTC's. Google, of course, has a really nice client for gmail.
Same with SMS, HandcentSMS is tons better than stock. You're NOT required to use stock apps and when it gets rooted, those are usually the first I dump. Along with NFL, Nascar and other junk.
Spend some time in the EVO forum on here and XDA esp. if you are new to android. TONS of good info, ideas, tweaks, etc.
