For those of you running custom 6.5 or 6.5.x ROMs, Livven SimpleGloss looks very nice for skinning your buttons with a shiny 3d look. You can access the simplegloss themes here:

Download the 128dpi version (or the 96dpi version for RealVGA users), install the cab, and then go into settings->today and select one of the livven themes (green, black, blue, or red).
One problem with it: I'm running a 6.5.x customer ROM and the today screen background looked checkered and strange after installing simplegloss, so I checked the box for "use this picture as background" and then selected my own graphics (I prefer basic black).
