I think that it's a bad move by HP, they could have waited and eventually Palm would have died because it seems nobody else was interested in buying Palm... waited for it to die and then go and buy WebOS cheaper!!! Just like when HP bought Compaq, HP too a dip then I think they will now..
I've never used WebOS so I'm know nothing about the OS

they could have gained a lot.. they are talking about making thier own OS why not use a good one and make it better. Design HTC sense UI around web o/s and it could have been AWESOME
