I'm not sure what phone you are talking about on VZW, but I think all the carriers are the same, if you root you void warranty. As long as you can go back to dead stock as you can on the Moment or Hero for example I don't see it being an issue, much like a WM phone. I don't think all phones can be put back to an un-rooted state, most can though, but I could be wrong
