"Helpful," perhaps. They still strike me, and many others, as inappropriate especially in a business context. Sometimes a .sig is longer than the actual email. Many are truly cringe-worthy.

What you're talking about, essentially, is advertising. You may like sending it but that doesn't mean others like reading it. Some of your recipients are probably still on dial-up. Most people around here, for example, can only get high-speed internet via satellite which is very expensive. Downloading useless graphics just to read an email is annoying to such people. In a business context there are more important things than self-promotion. Not pissing off the customers would be one of those things.
