A couple people were asking how the proximity sensor works. (I'm an EE and I did the electrical design to interface the sensor with the phone on another phone out in the market.)

The sensor can be a variety of different types. Some may have an IR LED (emitter) attached to the sensor so that it senses a certain frequency, others can be simple light sensors, depending on the application (not a phone) it could be a hall effects sensor (this is probably how the sensing of whether the phone is open or closed is detected), etc.

I was testing mine out (it seems very responsive, turns off an inch away from the face!) and I used both my finger and a piece of paper, so I think that it is a simple light sensor.
