It will absolutely use more battery. The htc weather, google maps (without use gps), and certain other apps use a function called "my location" which use the cell phone radio which is on all the time anyway and that doesn't use any significant amount of battery, but gps usage is the number 1 battery hog on the device, that's why when I use it I have my device plugged into my truck.
