yikes, I found the problem:
A couple of the pins in the USB connector got damaged somehow. I took it over to the sprint store and with a little jimmying, they got it all straightened and everything is back to normal.
Phew, dodged a bullet there... and i didn't bother to get insurance when I got this phone!
