To activate the phone, you call your carrier and tell them you want to activate the phone on your account and they'll guide you from there. You also said the ESN on the phone doesn't match. Make sure the ESN on the back of the phone is the same as the ESN on the Settings-Phone Settings-Phone Information menu.
